SADC HEALTH MINISTERS' MEETING BEGINS IN PRETORIA

Health Minister, Dr Nkosazana Zuma and the Department of Health are hosting a two-day meeting of SADC Health Minister, which started at the Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza in Pretoria this morning.

South Africa is the co-ordinator of SADC Health sector and is chairing the meeting.

Amongst the issues for discussion are, the review of the implementation of decisions of previous meetings that were held in Swaziland and Zimababwe in July and September in 1998 respectively.

The meeting will also finalise the SADC protocol on health, for submission to the Council of Ministers, establish a multi-sectoral approach on HIV/AIDS for the region, concretise discussions on telemedicine, interrogate malaria initiatives, tobacco control and development of contingency planes for dealing with the Y2K problem.

SADC Health Minister will brief the media at 12:00 - 12:30 on Friday, 16 April 1999 at the conference room, Holiday Inn Growne Plaza, Beatrix Street in Pretoria on the outcome of the meeting.
