STATEMENT BY SOUTH AFRICA ON THE INDIA AND PAKISTAN MISSILE TESTS

South Africa has received the reports of the missile tests conducted by India and Pakistan over the last few days with deep regret. India's testing of the Agni II missile on 11 April 1999 and Pakistan's testing of the Ghauri II missile on 14 April 1999 represent a continued escalation in the arms race in South Asia.

South Africa remains convinced that national, regional and international peace and security is not enhanced through the proliferation of military capabilities, especially as this relates to weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems. South Africa urges the two countries involved to demonstrate restraint, and to continue the dialogue between themselves so as to build on the accomplishment of the Lahore Declaration.
