CONSULTATIVE CONFERENCE ON THE COMMEMORATION OF CENTENARY OF THE ANGLO BOER WAR

A one day consultative conference on the commemoration of the centenary of the Anglo Boer War will be held in Durban on 16 April 1999.

The conference, organised by the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, will be attended by all role-players involved in the arrangements of the commemoration of the centenary of the Anglo Boer War, which will take place between 11 October 1999 to 31 May 2002.

The aim of the conference will be for those involved in the arrangements to inform Government about their plans, arrangements and proposals. Its recommendations will assist various levels of Government in formulating a policy framework for the commemoration at national level.

Some of the topics to be discussed will include:

- Historical perspectives of the War;

- Perspectives on preparations;

- The significance of the Commemoration;

- Presentations by the various organising committees and structures;

- A conceptual framework for all-inclusive commemorations aimed at nation building.

Speakers at the conference will include senior national and provincial Government representatives, leading academics and representatives involved in the arrangements at provincial and NGO levels. Other government departments like Environmental Affairs and Tourism will also be represented.
