ATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION PRE-SUMMIT WORKSHOP IN PARLY

Issued by: Government Communication and Information System

13 APRIL 1999

A consultative workshop was held today with representatives from Parliament, the private and public sectors, organisations of civil society, labour, religious organisations and academics. It forms part of preparation for the National Anti-Corruption Summit to be held in Parliament from 14-15 April 1999. Over 250 representatives from various sectors of South African society are expected to attend. The Ministries of Justice, Safety and Security, Public Service and Administration, and Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development are co-hosts of the Summit, funded by the European Union, and organised by the Public Service Commission.

The main objectives of this workshop is to allow all role-players and key stakeholders to plan and co-ordinate the national programme for the anti-corruption summit.

The workshop focused on:

1. Assessing the anti-corruption initiatives already being tackled within the various sectors of society;

2. Brainstorming guidelines to facilitate active and creative participation in the summit which are taking place in the Summit;

3. Formulating proposals for resolutions that may emanate from the Summit.

These resolutions should include:

3.1 A national strategy to fight corruption;

3.2 Specific sectoral programmes of action;

3.3 Establishing co-ordinating structures between and across various sectors; and

3.4 A framework of implementation.

Corruption can only be addressed if it is tackled in a holistic way, with all role-players coming together to develop concrete action plans and programmes.

It is intended that this workshop will provide role-players with an opportunity to think through issues related to developing a co-ordinated and effective national integrity strategy to fight corruption.

As a result of the workshop, delegates to the summit will be in a better position to tackle their critical task of building the national integrity strategy forward.
