30 March 1999
The Director of Public Prosecutions in Pretoria, Dr Silas Ramaite, and the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Bulelani Ngcuka, have announced that the state will appeal against the suspended jail sentence of Nicholas Steyn.
Dr Ramaite told the NDPP in Pretoria yesterday that his office was currently preparing to file for an application for leave to appeal in the High Court. He told Mr Ngcuka that after studying the preliminary report of the advocate in charge of the case, he felt that the sentence handed to Steyn was not an adequate deterrent and did not sufficiently address the interests of society.
Ngcuka, who was equally concerned about the leniency of the sentence, concurred with Dr Ramaite.
Issued by Sipho Ngwema on behalf of the National Director of Public Prosecutions.
