CACHALIA LEADER OF THE HOUSE, HAS RECUSED HIMSELF

Issued by: ANC Gauteng Provincial Caucus

Firoz Cachalia, Leader of the House, has recused himself from the meetings of the Privileges Committee of the Gauteng Legislature which will discuss whether Peter Leon abused his parliamentary privlege when, during a sitting of the house, he made insinuations about a cabinet member of the Gauteng Government having taken a R1 million bribe.

His decision was made in view of the fact that he has participated in a public discussion on e-tv with Peter Leon about Leon's refusal to make his information public and to refrain from innuendo.

The Privileges Committee has to consider a report by the Secretary of the Legislature and compile its own report to present to the house.

Thus questions raised by Firoz Cachalia will be settled by the time the legislature rises on March 30.
