Issued by: The Department of Home Affairs

The Department of Home Affairs is encouraged by the increased numbers of people who have been visiting its offices to apply for bar-coded identity documents and Temporary Registration Certificates (TRCs). The management of the Department met this morning an a strategy has been put in place to ensure that the Department will continue to cope with the demand for these documents.

For the remainder of this 3 week the Department will continue with the issuing of TRC's to people applying for bar-coded identity documents. Offices of the Department will remain open until 19:00 daily this week to accept applications for these documents.

Where the presence of mobile units are required the nearest office of the Department should be approached to arrange for this.

Persons who have applied for bar-coded identity documents more than two months ago and who have not received these should enquire from the office of application or at the Department's toll-free number, 0800 60 90.

The Director-General of Home Affairs, Mr Albert Mokoena, has acknowledged the commitment of Home Affairs staff who have worked until the early hours of morning over the weekend to ensure that applications are timeously dealt with.
