REQUEST FOR COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO VIOLENCE IN KWAZULU/NATAL

Issued by: Office of the President

The Office of the President confirms that the President has received a request from the Ministers of Safety and Security and of Justice that he consider appointing a commission of Inquiry into the ongoing violent conflict in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The motivation for the request relates to the need to reduce incidents of violence, and the current tensions in the province. The Commission is intended to compliment the peace initiatives currently being undertaken by the leadership of the IFP and the ANC as well as the security and criminal justice measures that have already been undertaken.

The President has indicated that he is, in principle, in favour of appointing such a commission of inquiry but is awaiting proposals on the precise terms of reference and the identification of a Commissioner or Commissioners who have the necessary standing and respect as well as the capaci6ty to conduct such an inquiry expeditiously and independently.
