Issued by: Office of the President

STATEMENT ON DISCUSSIONS WITH LIBYAN LEADER COLONEL MUAMMAR QADDAFI ON THE LOCKERBIE ISSUE

Director-General in the Office of the President Professor Jakes Gerwel on Thursday returned from Tripoli where he, as special envoy of President Mandela, together with Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdullaziz as special envoy of the Royal House of Saudi Arabia, met with Colonel Muammar Qaddafi in further consultations on the Lockerbie issue.

We are happy to be able to annouce that positive results were achieved in these discussions and that common understanding was reached on all the outstanding issues on this matter. This was made possible by the sincere co-operation of Colonel Qaddafi who addressed letters in this regard to President Mandela and the Saudi Royal House.

A report has been made to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Anan who mandated this initiative by President Mandela and King Faad and Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. The Secretary-General will now be taking the matter forward.
