MEDIA ADVISORY ON ISSUE OF ELECTION DATE

In response to queries regarding the issue of the period in which elections will be held, we wish to reiterate that the approach remains as contained in the text of the President's Speech distributed to the media. In other words, it remains the government's intention, all thins being equal, to hold elections on a date between the 18th and 27th of May.

However, given the discussions currently under way among legal representatives of the various parties in the case being heard at the Cape Town Supreme Court, the President decided not to expressly pronounce on these putative dates in his Address.

However, the media are advised that the fact of this intention can be made public.
