STATEMENT ON THE PROPOSED MEETING BETWEEN DEPUTY PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI AND ROELF MEYER

Deputy President Thabo Mbeki has considered the request by the UDM leadership for a meeting to discuss the situation in Kwazulu-Natal's Midlands area. The request was referred by President Nelson Ma.dela for Deputy President Mbeki's attention.

After consideration of the request, the Deputy President is of the view that the Ministry of Safety and Security is competent to deal with the issues which the UDM leadership hope to raise in such a meeting.

In this regard, the Minister of Safety and Security, Sydney Mufamadi and irector of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Nqcuka are currently making arrangements for the meeting to take place as soon as possible.
