The Department of Foreign Affairs has learnt with shock and sorrow about the passing away of the former Prime Minister of Lesotho, Dr Ntsu Mokhehle on 6 January 1999. He was Head of Government of the Kingdom during the period 1993-98, when he retired from active politics.
As a founder member of the Basotholand Congress Pary (BCP), and subsequently leader of Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD), Dr Mokhehle led his party to the first democratic elections in 1965.
His contribution to the struggle for Independence and Democracy for the Basotho nation will always be remembered by the people of Lesotho and the continent.
The Department of Foreign Affairs expresses condolences and sympathy to the family, friends, colleagues and the entire Basotho nation for this tragic loss.
