MBEKI ATTENDANCE OF THE OAU SUMMIT IN OUAGADOUGOU

Deputy President Thabo Mbeki attended the Opening Session of the Summit of the Central Organ of the OAU in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso which began on Thursday 17 December. The Deputy President who is accompanied by among others Deputy Minister and Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad and Wehile Nhlapo respectively arrived in Burkina Faso in the early hours of Thursday 17 December ahead of the Summit.

The Opening Session of the Summit was addressed by OAU Chairperson Blaise Compaore, president of Burkina Faso. The Summit is convened in an attempt to find an amicable resolution to and give impetus to regional efforts aimed at ending the current conflict situations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guinea Bissau, Ethiopia/Eritrea, Angola and The Comores.

The Summit is scheduled to end its business by Friday 18 December whereupon the Deputy President will return to South Africa.
