INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON POST BANKING BEGINS TOMORROW
An international conference aimed at looking at the role of the post bank in extending financial services to the poor will begin at 9am tomorrow (Monday, November 16) at the Sandton Hilton Hotel.
A number of key international participants are expected, particularly from the Netherlands (which co-sponsored this conference) and the World Bank (sponsor of the conference). Key speakers include
- the most senior UN representative on postal issues, Mr T E Leavey, director general of the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union,
- Africa's most senior representative of the OAU on postal issues, Mr Gebrewold, secretary general of the Pan African Telecommunications Union;
- a senior representative from the World Bank, Mr Kumar Ranganatan
- five African ministers with responsibility either for postal services or finance.
Jay Naidoo, Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Broadcasting will be giving the keynote speech tomorrow morning (Monday, November 16) at 9:30am where he will be outlining his vision for post bank services in South Africa.
A major focus of the conference will be finalising the action plan for a continental-wide multi-country project to promote postal banking in Africa.
The conference ends on Wednesday, November 18.
