STATEMENT ON THE MALTREATMENT OF TULI ELEPHANTS

Issued by: Department Of Foreign Affairs

The South African Government rejects allegations that cruel training methods of elephants are permissible in South Africa.

South Africa has a proud and distinguished record in animal conservation and is recognised internationally as a world leader in its policy on the conservation of elephants in particular. This reputation is enhanced by comprehensive legislation embodied in the Animal Protection Act.

South Africa not only has one of the best managed elephant populations in the world but also has the added advantage of having internationally recognised experts in this field who are continuously involved in advanced scientific research to ensure that the delicate balance between the management of the species and the natural habitat is maintained as far as possible.

Recent media reports on the alleged maltreatment of the "Tuli Elephants" are disturbing and are of grave concern to the Government. While it is unable to comment on these specific allegations as the case is subjudice, it is confident that the South African courts will take a decision in the best interests of the elephants.
