PEACE AGREEMENT BROKERED TO END GUINEA-BISSAU CRISIS

Issued by: Department of Foreigh Affairs

The South African Government welcomes the conclusion in Abuja, Nigeria, on 1 November 1998, of an agreement between the parties to the crisis in Guinea-Bissau. It is the earnest hope of South Africa that the parties to this agreement adhere to its provisions in returning Guinea-Bissau to peaceful democratic rule in the near future. In addition, South Africa commends the unstinting efforts of all of those involved, most notably Cape Verde, The Gambia and Nigeria (within the ECOWAS context) in trying to broker peace in this conflict. South Africa is appreciative of the fact that the West African sub-region has responded so decidedly to a threat to peace in the region.

Through sub-regional cooperation in the continent, South Africa believes that all conflicts could be resolved through peaceful negotiated settlements.
