Issued by: Office of the President
Cabinet met today as a Meeting of Ministers, in the absence of both the President and the Deputy President. The decisions taken at the meeting will therefore be ratified at the next fully-constituted Cabinet meeting.
The meeting, among others, discussed the programme of parliament as well as Cabinet and Cabinet Committees for next year. It also examined the programme for the National Action Plan to promote human rights and arrangements for Ministers' participation in the World AIDS Day programme.
The meeting adopted the proposal for the Freedom Park Legacy Project, which will be located in Gauteng and will include a Wall of Remembrance.
With regard to appointments, the meeting approved the promotion of Major-General AA Masondo who will take on a new responsibility as Chief of the Service Corps at the rank of Lieutenant-General. The Ministers also concurred with the proposal that the new Director of Public Prosecutions should receive the same remuneration package as that of the Public Protector.
The meeting also discussed mechanisms of liaison with NEDLAC, including in particular the evaluation of government's input into the work of this body. It also noted South Africa's continued participation in United National deliberations on the establishment of an International Criminal Court.
The meeting also approved guidelines on the use of credit cards by political office-bearers and relevant government officials, in order to obviate any possible misinterpretations and ensure proper control of such spending.
