MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE PEACE ACCORD SIGNED BY PRESIDENT JAMIL MAHUAD OF ECUADOR AND PRESIDENT ALBERTO FUJIMORI OF PERU
The South African Government takes note of and applauds the Peace Accord signed by President Jamil Mahuad of Ecuador and President Alberto Fujimori of Peru in Brasilia on 26 October 1998.
This Accord brings to an end over a century of differences between Peru and Ecuador on their common border, and comes as a result of the willingness of these states to earnestly pursue peace, as well as the tireless efforts of the four states guaranteeing the Accord, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and the United States.
In the spirit of South-South cooperation, the South African Government commends the vision displayed by Peru and Ecuador and welcomes the prospects inherent in the Accord of boosting bilateral trade between the two states and attracting foreign investment to the region as a whole. Southern Africa is moving closer to the Andean region of Latin America, particularly in terms of economic cooperation, as witnessed in the recent opening of South African Embassies in Lima and Caracas.
The Accord of 26 October 1998 can only enhance commercial and financial links between the two zones.
