PROGRESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST PEACE PROCESS

Issued by: Government Communications (GCIS)

Reacting this morning to the announcement of an agreement between Israeli and Palestinian leaders Foreign Minister Alfred Nzo said that "This is a triumph for all peace-loving people, both in the Middle East and the world at large". Meeting the commitments of this agreement would require sacrifice from all parties and the real test lay in how these would be met, the Minister warned.

Minister Nzo offered fulsome praise for the unstinting efforts of President Clinton and his team as well as the extraordinary efforts of King Hussein of Jordan, who emerged from his sick-bed, in the face of severe ill-health, to play a key role in ensuring that peace could be the winner.
