RAPE OF TWO SWISS TOURISTS

Issued by: Ministry for Safety and Security

17 OCTOBER 1998

We have been briefed about the progress in the investigations into the rape of two Swiss tourists in Northern Kwazulu-Natal last Wednesday.

We have made contact with the Swiss Embassy to inform them that the police will do everything possible to arrest all the suspects and see to it that they are punished to the full extent of the law.

Two arrests have already been made and it is hoped that further suspects will be arrested soon. The Ministry also expressed its regret to the Swiss Embassy for the incident as their citizens had come to South Africa for a holiday, but instead became victims of this barbaric crime.

We have also, through the Swiss Embassy, conveyed our profound sympathies to the victims.
