Deputy President Thabo Mbeki to attend 2nd Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD II)
Deputy President Thabo Mbeki will depart for Tokyo, Japan on Sunday 18 October 1998 to attend the 2nd Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD II). The TICAD 11 conference is organised by the Government of Japan, the United Nations and the Global Coalition for Africa.
The objective of the conference is to reaffirm donor nations partnerships with Africa based on the principles of self-reliance of African countries and a commitment by their development partners to support these efforts.
It is expected that the conference will play a catalytic role in enhancing Asia-Africa cooperation and will culminate with the adoption of the Agenda for Action to provide guidelines for actions to be undertaken by African countries and their development partners in the spirit of a global partnership.
The conference will also examine the role of the private sector in socio-economic development and therefore the need for closer public/private partnership.
