SELECTION OF MEMBERS OF THE DEMARCATION OARD

1. The Local Government: Municipal Demarcation Act No.27 of 1998, which provides for the establishment of the Municipal Demarcation Board, was published in the Government Gazette No. 19020 on 3rd of July 1998. Applicants were invited for selection as members of the Board, the closing date being the 4th of September 1998. 529 applications have been received.

2. Section 8(1) (b) of the Act empowers the Minister of Constitutional Development to establish a selection panel. THe panel met for the first time on the 23rd of September 1998.

3. The panel has agreed on the process to be followed leading to the selection of the required number of candidates. The Board will be made up of 11 members. The panel must, in terms of the Act, recommend 14 names to the Minister and the President. The President must appoint the required number of members from the list.

4. The Selection Panel met for the second time on 8 October 1998 and compiled the preliminary short list of candidates. The final short list will be compiled at a meeting scheduled for the 14th of October 1998. Interviews of candidates will be held on the 26th and the 27th of October 1998. THe interviews will be open to public and will be conducted in the Courtroom of the Constitutional Court, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
