A presentation ceremony is to be held at the Azaadville Primary School in Krugersdorp on Monday, 05 October 1998, for winners of an art competition that was launched by the Department of Justice in May 1998.
The art competition, called "Children and the law", focussed on children in primary school, grade 1-3, with a view to conceptualise by way of drawing, their understanding of children and the law. Due to the competition being a pilot project, it was limited to rural and urban schools in one province only. A draw was conducted to identify to Province where the competition was to be held. Gauteng was the lucky province to have been drawn. A further draw was conducted to identify 5 urban and 5 rural schools who then participated in the competition.
THE PARTICIPATING URBAN SCHOOLS WERE:
(1) Burgher Right Primary (Pretoria West) (2) Die Arend (Brakpan) (3) Riverlea Primary (Riverlea) (4) Laerskool Kenmare (Krugersdorp) (5) Azaadville Primary (near Krugersdorp)
THE PARTICIPATING RURAL SCHOOLS WERE:
(1) Letsie Primary (Tsakane) (2) Masimini Primary (Bronkhorstspruit) (3) Laerskool Uniefees (outside Pretoria) (4) Laerskool De Beer (Welverdiend) (5) Thembalihle (Vosloorus)
The winning urban school, Azaadville Primary, is to receive R1000 and the pupil who produced the winning artwork, Talia Brigemohum, will receive R500. The same applies to the winning rural school, Letsie Primary and their winner, Elias Morapedi.
Ten additional winners (runners up), each of whom will be awarded R100, have also been chosen:
The prizes at the presentation ceremony, which is to be held at Azaadville Primary school on 05 October 1998, will be awarded by the Deputy Minister of Justice, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. Also present at the function will be representatives from the Justice Regional office, the Gauteng Education Department, the Human Rights Commission, National Plan of Action for Children of the Deputy President's office, as well as the sponsor of the prizes, Malescla Health.
This art competition has not only proved to raise awareness amongst children but the artwork will also be utilised bey the Justice Department for calendars and further campaign involving youth. The Department of Justice is committed to ensuring a better future for the youth of South Africa.
