Issued by: Government Communications (GCIS)

5 OCTOBER 1998

The Minister for Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development, Mr Valli Moosa expressed shock at the death of Mayor Dlephu of Brakpan. His death comes at a time when Local Government is going through a tremendous challenge, give the White Paper on Local Government and the new Local Government Legislation presently serving before Parliament.

His death is a great loss to the people of South Africa.

The manner of his death is indeed very painful and does not say good thing about the moral fiber of our society. His life was led well and in his practices as mayor he has led with firmness and example.

We add our support and voice to the Government's attempt to investigate to the very end to find the real cause of his untimely death. Until this matter has seen conclusively investigated, we would call on all not to speculate about the cause of his death as respect for his bereaved family.

His life remains a monument of the commitment of government, working together with the community for a new culture. To his family and loved ones we express condolences and we hope that his good work will be taken forward by all who are left behind.
