CONDEMNATION OF MAYOR KILLING

ACTING PREMIER OF GAUTENG, DAN MOFOKENG, CONDEMNS THE KILLING OF BRAKPAN MAYOR

The Acting Premier of Gauteng, Dan Mofokeng, has expressed shock and concern at the untimely death of Mr Calcot Dlephu, the Mayor of Brakpan, last night (Friday).

Mr Dlephu, who was shot at about midnight, was driving between Tsakane and Duduza when the shooting took place. He was found laying dead in his car by colleagues who were driving a few kilometres behind him. A Brakpan councillor, who was one of the colleagues who driving behind the mayor, was also seriously injured when an unknown man opened fire on the colleagues who went to investigate why the mayor, whose car was parked on the side of the road, was not responding to the their cellphone calls..

Speaking in Johannesburg earlier today, Mr Mofokeng said Mr Dlephu's death was a great loss to the people of Brakpan as well as to the local government. "It must also be pointed that this is the first time a mayor has been killed since the 1995 elections," said Mr Mofokeng. "We would therefore like to urge the police to bring the culprits to book and to ensure that similar killings do not occur again."

The acting Premier also urged members of the community who might have any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible for Mr Dlephu's death to assist the police in their investigation.

Mr Mofokeng also sent his condolences to the Mr Dlephu's family, colleagues and friends.
