PLANNED MEETING BETWEEN MANDELA AND LETSIE III

STATEMENT ON PLANNED MEETING BETWEEN PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA AND KING LETSIE III

At the request of President Nelson Mandela, His Majesty King Letsie III of Lesotho will tomorrow visit South Africa for an audience with the President.

President Mandela requested the meeting in order to share ideas with the King about the latest developments in the Kingdom of Lesotho, and particularly to give added impetus to the process of normalising the situation and to negotiations aimed at finding a lasting solution to the problems in that country.

The President took this initiative in consultation with the Prime Minister of Lesotho and the President of the Republic of Botswana. He is currently in the process of consulting with the leadership of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

The meeting will take place in Cape Town, at the President's Genadendaal Residence at 09H00.
