Pretoria - Allocation for medical interns has been finalised and all students have been informed of their allocation. A total number of 1220 applications of final medical students were received. 972 which is 80% of the applicants will be posted to the hospitals of their first choice. 174 which is 14% will be posted to their second to fifth choices.
The placement has ensured a fair distribution and mixing of the graduates from the different institutions throughout the country.
All the relevant stakeholders including National Department of Health, Deans of Medical Faculties, student representatives of medical faculties, heads of provinces, Junior Doctors Association of South Africa, National Intern Alliance, South African Medical Health Services, South African Medical Association and Interim Medical & Dental Council of South Africa were involved in the process that decided on the placement criteria.
The Department of Health wishes these young graduates the best in this important milestone in their lives.
