MEDIA RELEASE BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE: APPOINTMENT OF REGIONAL HEAD, GAUTENG
It is hereby announced that Mrs Beryl Rose Simelane has been appointed as the new Regional Head, Gauteng. Mrs Simelane, who obtained her B.Proc-degree at the University of Natal in 1995, has significant experience in the legal field. During 1993 to 1995 she was a paralegal at the Legal Resources Centre, where she also served as a candidate attorney from 1996 to February 1998. Up to her appointment as Regional Head, she served as the Regional Director of the Black Sash, Durban.
Mrs Simelane has always been involved in the community. In 1996 she completed a course in Community Mediation Training at the Independent Mediation Society of South Africa. She also did courses in AIDS/HIV Advocacy Skills and Peace Education.
The establishment of the nine regional offices, each with a Regional Head at the helm, is a move away from the previously completely centralised administration of justice. The regional offices are charged with the responsibility of co-ordinating functions relating to the administration of justice at provincial level. This will ensure a better delivery of justice services, in particular to the rural communities, and thereby making justice equally accessible to everyone in South Africa.
It is believed that Mrs Simelane will be a great asset to the administration of justice and will contribute to achieving our goal of "justice for all!"
