MEDIA ALERT ON THE LAUNCH OF THE INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT PLANNING AND THE LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MANUALS BY THE MINISTER FOR PROVINCIAL AFFAIRS AND CONSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
One of the most daunting challenges facing local Government in South Africa is its role in boosting the local economy. This can be done by investing in the basics- by providing good quality, cost effective services and by making the local arena a pleasant place to live and work. The Local Economic Development programmes were thus created. Municipalities also face an immense challenge in developing sustainable settlements which meet the needs and improve the quality of life of local communities- hence the need for Integrated Development Planning.
The Ministry and the Department of Constitutional Development have engaged in a massive drive to make these programmes effective for Municipalities. On Monday, 7 September 1998, the Minister for Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development, Mr Mohammed Valli Moosa, will launch the IDP and LED Manuals, targeted at South Africa's more than 800 municipalities.
These manuals will assist municipalities to fulfill their developmental mandate and manage their financial resources, in line with the agreed upon policies. Minister Moosa, who will be the keynote speaker at the launch on Monday, is expected to address the questions of how the IDP and LED projects are going to take the cause of local government transformation forward.
Up to 800 representatives from Municipalities, national government departments, business organizations and organized local government are expected to attend the Launch to be held from 13h00 at the St Georges Hotel, Rietvlei Dam, Irene (011 316 1254 for more information on directions). A media conference will be held just before the Launch at 12h00 in the Boardroom and will be addressed by Minister Moosa, the Director General of the Department of Constitutional Development, Mr Zam Titus and other Senior departmental officials.
Please confirm attendance of the media briefing with Ms Nozipo Buthelezi or Mr Leon Bezuidenhout on (012) 334 0600.
