MEDIA STATEMENT ON ASSISTANCE RENDERED BY SOUTH AFRICA IN THE EVACUATION OF TANZANIAN INSTRUCTORS FROM THE DRC
At the request of President Benjamin Mkapa from Tanzania, the South African Government decided to render assistance, on humanitarian grounds, with the airlifting of Tanzanian military instructors from Kamina, in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, to Dar es Salaam.
In view of the deteriorating security situation in the DRC, the Tanzanian government decided to evacuate to Tanzania the instructors, who had been stationed in the DRC at the request of President Laurent Kabila.
The airlift, which was successfully performed by the South African National Defence Force on 23 and 24 August 1998, took place with the full knowledge and consent of the Government of the DRC.
