MASHATILE CONDEMNED THE HIJACKING OF THREE WOMEN- SOWETO

Gauteng Safety and Security MEC Paul Mashatile condemned the hijacking and gang raping of three women in Soweto early on Saturday.

"I condemn such dispicable acts against women and urge the police to make sure that the perpetrators are brought to book as a matter of urgency and that justice takes its course." the mec said.

Mashatile called on the community to assist the police in their investigation.

Reports reaching Mashatile's office indicate that the incident took place at 2am on Saturday in Yeoville when three ladies were stopped by a man with a firearm and ordered out of the car into the boot of the car.

They were then driven to Soweto where they were gang-raped by three men.

Their car was taken.

The anti-hijacking unit in Johannesburg is investigating the matter and reports indicate that investigations are quite advanced at this stage.

The MEC has said that such act emphasise the urgent need for the criminal justice system to punish severely perpetrators of such heinous crimes and to ensure that women and children are protected.

The Department of safety and security has prioritise the issue of safety of women in its programme for the year, including improvement of victim support services.
