ADJUSTMENT OF INCREASES FOR MP'S

Issued by: Office of the President

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE ON ADJUSTMENT OF INCREASES FOR MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT

The President's Office confirms that the 1998 increase in salaries of Ministers and members of parliament is to be adjusted to a 5% increase, in line with the July Consumer Price Index (CPI) (6%) less one percent. This is the CPI figures which has also been used in the public sector wage negotiations.

The 7,6% increase for Members of Parliament as well as Ministers which had been previously approved by the President followed the recommendations of the Commission on Remuneration of Public Representatives under Judge Jan Steyn and were based on the average CPI for 1997 of 8,6%.

However, the President, after consultation with his colleagues in the Cabinet, is of the view that the increase should now be based on the same index as that applicable to the public service even though the wage cycle differs.
