CLOSURE OF SA CONSULATES-GENERAL HAMBURG AND FRANKFURT

Issued by: The Department of Foreign Affairs

MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE CLOSURE OF SOUTH AFRICAN CONSULATES-GENERAL IN HAMBURG AND FRANKFURT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

As announced by Foreign Minister Alfred Nzo during his budget vote debate in Parliament in May, the Department of Foreign Affairs is undergoing a process of rationalisation and reallocation of its resources. In line with this process it has been decided to close the South African Consulates-General in Hamburg and Frankfurt in Germany by the end of 1998.

While the closures are regretted, the South African Embassy in Bonn, which will relocate to Berlin in the year 2000, and the Consulate-General in Munich, will continue to promote and protect South Africa's interests in Germany, including the areas previously served by the Consulates-General in Hamburg and Frankfurt. The closures will not, therefore, affect the excellent state of relations between the two countries.
