MUFAMADI STATEMENT ON BOMB BLAST

Issued by: Ministry for Safety and Security

PRETORIA 26 JUNE 1998

I am outraged by the unpatriotic and cowardly act carried out by those responsible for throwing a pipe bomb into the Mowbray Police Station in the early hours of this morning.

We will not be surprised if this act of terror turns out to be a reaction to the recent breakthroughs made by the police against some of the possible perpetrators of violence on the Cape Flats.

Some of these noteworthy breakthroughs, include the arrest of suspects in the case involving the theft of weapons and ammunition from the Public Order Policing Service base at Faure, as well as the recent arrest of two men who had allegedly sold weapons from the boot of a car and from one of their homes.

We will not allow terrorists to inconvenience law-abiding citizens by attacking police stations - places where our people go to seek relief against criminals.
