Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

The MEC for Public Safety and Security in Gauteng, Mr Paul Mashatile, has called on the Provincial Commissioner of Police Sharma Maharaj to intervene decisively in bringing law and order in Diepsloot following the brutal killing of three people yesterday (Saturday).

"I condemn the brutal killing of people and urge the community not to take the law into their own hands but rather work with the police in fighting criminality," the MEC said.

Three people are reported to have been killed when a mob took the law into its own hands in Diepsloot following an alleged attempt by the three to commit robbery in a shebeen in the area. The police are investigating the matter.

"I call on the community of Diepsloot to assist the police in ensuring that the culprits are arrested soonest and brought to book," the MEC further said.

Meanwhile, the MEC has also sent a team from the Secretariat for Safety and Security in Gauteng to go into the area and investigate the matter as well as ensure that calm is brought into the area as a matter of urgency.
