Following on a tradition that began in 1996, about 180 pupils are to attend the Gauteng Youth Parliament on Monday, 15 June 1998 at the Gauteng Legislature, corner Market and Rissik Streets, Johannesburg, from 10:00 - 13:00.
The Gauteng Youth Parliament is part of the country - wide programme to commemorate the 16 June 1976 Student Uprising.
From the 180 pupils selected from 18 Gauteng schools districts, 90 of them (pupils) will participate in the Sitting of the Youth Parliament and others will be observers. In a preparatory session to be held on Thursday, 11 June 1998, the pupils will elect a Speaker, Premier, 10 MEC's, Leader of the House, Chairperson of committees, Secretary of the Legislature, three political parties and their Whips. The debate will be on the following: 1. Teenagers and AIDS/HIV 2. Racism in South Africa's schools 3. Compulsory Community Youth Service
The Gauteng Legislature Public Relations and Proceedings Units together with Gauteng Education Department have consulted closely and actively in planning this event. The exercise is part of a commitment towards deepening the understanding of democracy by demystifying the legislative process and optimising public access to the institution.
Other dignitaries scheduled to attend are : the Speaker of Gauteng Legislature, Trevor Fowler - Premier, Motshekga Mathole - MEC for Education, Mary Metcalfe - Chairperson of Gauteng Petitions and Public Participation Committee, Mr Vusi Mavuso and other MPL's.
