Mr Joseph s. Blatter FIFA PO Box 85 8030 Zurich Switzerland
Dear Sir
I am delighted at your election as the next President of the International Federation of Football Associations yesterday. In expressing my delight, I am certain I speak not only for myself and the people of South Africa, but for the entire African continent and the people of the developing and under-developed countries.
I admire the efforts you and the outgoing President Mr Joao Havelange made to improve the standing of poorer nations in world football. It is largely due to your efforts and vision that Africa has five teams at the world cup this year, and there is even talk of a surprise African performance.
I am heartened by our resolve that the World Cup in 2006 should take place in Africa. This is a remarkable display of foresight and commitment to development of all people around the globe.
I am told by our Minister of Sports Mr Steve Tshwete that an invitation is on its way to you to visit South Africa soon after the World Cup in France.
I am looking forward to the visit and again convey my congratulations to you and your family.
I wish you a successful tournament at France '98.
Nelson Mandela
