Justice Minister Dullah Omar delivered the keynote address at the launch of the book "Forgotten Heroes" by Manie Booley at the University of the Western Cape in Bellville.
Minister Omar praised Saru's role in building non-racial sport during the difficult years of apartheid.
Even though Saru was no more, he called for a rebirth and re-kindling of the non-racial traditions and ethos of the union.
He said that transformation in sport was necessary and must be speeded up to ensure that all South African children and youths can participate in sport on an equal basis.
Sport transformation was part of total transformation to create a better life for all, he said.
Minister Omar thanked former Saru administrators, referees and players for their contributions to non-racial sport.
They contributed to restoring the dignity of black people and nation building.
