DR BAKILI MULUZI OF MALAWAI TO VISIT SA

MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE OFFICIAL VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA BY THE PRESIDENT OF MALAWI, DR BAKILI MULUZI: 2 TO 4 JUNE 1998

The President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr Muluzi and Mrs Anne Muluzi, will pay a two-day official visit to South Africa, and will meet with President Nelson Mandela on 2 June 1998. Dr Muluzi will also meet with Deputy President Mbeki, the Speaker of Parliament, Dr Frene Ginwala, the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Mr Patrick Lekota and the Premiers of the Western Cape and Gauteng.

Dr Muluzi will be accompanied by the Malawian Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, of Commerce and Industry, of Transport and of Lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Surveys. The Malawian Minister of Foreign Affairs will, during the visit, meet with the South African Minister of Safety and Security, Mr FS Mufamadi and with the Deputy Director General Multilateral Affairs, Mr A Minty.

The visit of President Muluzi will further enhance and expand the sound relations which already exist between the two countries.

The President will be accompanied by a group of influential Malawian businesspeople, who will meet with South African representatives of business such as the South African Chamber of Business (SACOB) and the South African Chamber of Mines.

Bilateral trade between the two countries has grown steadily, reaching R727 million in 1997.
