MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF FORMER PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA IN ZAMBIA

The South African government welcomes the release from detention of Dr Kenneth Kaunda by the Zambian government in Lusaka today. The release of Dr Kaunda creates an opportunity for all political parties to engage in a meaningful dialogue in the interests of all the people of Zambia.

President Mandela, in his capacity as chairman of SADC as well as in his personal capacity, will follow events in Zambia with interest and trusts that the release of Dr Kaunda will further promote the reconciliation process in that country.
