Issued by: Southern Metropolitan Local Council
29 May 1998
The Southern Metropolitan Local Council (SMLC) will be upgrading, renovating and transforming the existing Poortjie Community Hall into a library and information centre.
This follows negotiations between the SMLC and the Gauteng Library and Information Services Directorate after which the Department decided to allocate an amount of R375 000 for the establishment of a community library at the Poortjie Community Hall.
As part of the 1996/97 SMLC Capital Budget, the Health and Social Development Cluster spent R150 000 on upgrading the Poortjie Community Hall which was in a dilapidated state. The National Department of Sport and Recreation then entered into a public-public partnership with the SMLC and provided funds to have the facility fenced. Renovations were undertaken on the existing club house and ablution block.
Poortjie has a population of approximately 100 000 and the two schools in the area do not have sufficient resource material to aid students in their studies. The transformation of the community hall into a library and information centre will open the doors of learning for residents in Poortjie.
The Southern Metropolitan Local Council is committed to improving the lives of its residents and will continue to look at ways of securing resources to develop and upgrade community facilities.
