Ms Joyce Kgoali was today (Thursday) sworn in as a member of the Gauteng Legislature in preparation for her appointment as Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works.
Ms Kgoali will shortly replace current MEC for Transport Mr Paul Mashitile, who earlier this month became Gauteng MEC for Public Safety and Security after Ms Jessie Duarte resigned.
"I think it is important to continue with existing developments in this department. However, I also will focus on the main problematic area, which is the current taxi violence in Gauteng," Ms Kgoali said after she was sworn in by Gauteng Legislature Speaker, Mr Trevor Fowler.
She hoped to urgently achieve the peace needed in the taxi industry, adding she had attended meetings between the various taxi associations earlier this week to discuss ways of stemming the violence.
Among the dignitaries to attend the ceremony were Gauteng Premier Dr Mathole Motshekga, ANC Chief Whip in the legislature Mr Richard Mdakane as well as close relatives.
The constitution says only an MPL can serve as a provincial minister. Ms Kgoali left her position on the National Council of Provinces to take up her seat in the legislature.
