QUESTION NO 780: MAY 1998

780. MR A J LEON ASKED THE MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM:

(1) Whether any items and/or services were purchased with an official credit card by a certain person, whose name has been furnished to his Department for the purpose of his reply, during the latest specified period of 12 months for which information is available; if so, (a) what items and/or services and (b) what cost was incurred in respect of each of these purchases;

(2) whether a voucher has been obtained from the said person for each of these purchases; if not, for which items have vouchers not been obtained; if so, what are the relevant details.

780. THE MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AND TOURISM REPLIES:

(1) At the request of Deputy Minister Mokaba, I have instituted an internal inquiry into events which led to an article about my department and Ministry appearing in the Mail & Guardian newspaper of 24 April 1998.

I will be in a position to address the Honourable Member's question once the relevant Committee of Inquiry has tabled its report before me.
