MANDELA STATEMENT ON COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY

Issued by: Office of the President

The Office of the President has taken note of the statement by Mr Peter Leon of the Democratic Party demanding that a Judicial Commission of Enquiry be appointed to investigate alleged improper personnel appointments and maladministration in the Premier's Office in Gauteng.

Whereas this office has not received the letter from Mr Leon, we would like to indicate, it is not envisaged that the President would involve himself in each and every administrative complaint. Fortunately, the Democratic Party themselves seem to realise that the Public Service Commission may be the appropriate mechanism for dealing with the matter.

In addition the Office of the President would urge the DP, should it not find satisfaction with the Public Service Commission to utilise the food offices of the Public Protecter, who have done a sterling job in the past in dealing with matters of this kind.

Otherwise the observations of the Democratic Party belong in the realm of public political debate which characterises all demoercies. The Gauteng legislative Chambers provide another platform where these complaints ca be ventilated.
