The Air Traffic and Navigation Services Company Limited (ATNS), as part of its South African Radar Replacement and Improvement Programme (SARRIP), has signed a new contract with Airsys ATM and Decca South Africa (Pty) Ltd, for the delivery of three STAR 2000 state-of-the-art S band primary surveillance radars and one additional RSM 970 I Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar.
The STAR 2000 radars will be installed at the three main South African airports of Johannesburg, Cape town and Durban. The first equipment will be delivered within twelve months.
STAR 2000 is the new generation radar manufactured by Airsys ATM to meet the stringent operational requirements for control of aircraft in their final approach phases to airports. The radar offers excellent performance and reliability in full compliance with international standards, using the latest digital signal processing technologies. It is equipped with a fully solid-state modular S-band transmitter, automatically reconfigurable and processing receiver channels.
It is the latest step in the ongoing process of the modernisation and upgrading of the Air Traffic Services infrastructure, used by the aviation industry within South Africa.
In September 1997, a contract was signed with ATNS for the supply of five RSM 970 I Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar Systems, a national remote control and monitoring facility and a number of upgrades to existing equipment currently in use by ATNS (in Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein), as well as a new control centre for Cape Town.
Two RSM 970 MSSRs and two Eurocat display systems ordered in January 1996 have now been in operational use for more than 12 months in the Durban International Airport and Port Elizabeth airport.
In addition, ADS trials (FANS-I/A) are currently conducted between ATNS and major airlines, the core system being an EASY (Enhanced ADS System) station installed by Airsys ATM and DECCA South Africa in the Johannesburg air traffic control centre.
This brings the total value of recent Airsys ATM business in South AFrica to over 180MF.
