PUBLIC SERVICE ASKS FOR Y2K PROJECT MANAGEMENT

While the Department of State Expenditure is responsible for transversal computer systems within Government, the Department of Public Service and Administration provides guidance to Government Departments on preparing departmental IT systems to deal with the Year 2000.

However, final accountability for ensuring that a department is ready to face the Year 2000 without critical IT-related problems lies with the accounting officer of each department. The role of the National Year 2000 Decision Support Centre (NY2KDSC) is to monitor progress of the individual department's progress and to facilitate cooperation between departments in finding solutions to the Year 2000 phenomenon.

Speaking at the NY2KDSC's Press Conference at Africa Telecom today, Public Sector Executive Esau Mailula reported on the outcome of the first meeting of the National Year 2000 Decision Support Centre's Public Sector Committee, which was held on 24 April 1998.

According to Esau the meeting identified that there is a general need for Y2K project management within the Public Sector.

Departments have also expressed concern about procurement procedures relating to Y2K compliant services and products. The Department of State Expenditure indicated that to date tenders had been using an older version of the definition of Y2K compliancy. The new refined definition known as "Y2K Conformity Requirements" will now be implemented.

Accounting Officers or Y2K Project Managers within the Public Service are requested to contact Esau Mailula at Cel. 083-676 2577 in order to gain more information on and membership to the NY2KDSC's Public Service Committee.
