STATEMENT ON THE SARFU-NSC STAND-OFF

Issued by: Ministry of Sport and Recreation

This Ministry has taken note of the media interest in our position on the stand-off between SARFU and the NSC in general and today's SARFU meeting in particular.

We need to place on record that we are as determined as ever to have the affairs of SARFU probed by a Judicial Commission of Inquiry.

We met with the NSC a few weeks ago for the purpose of understanding their own position with regard to SARFU as well as to reaffirm our position on the probe. We promised to provide Cabinet with a report on the meeting for their attention.

Nothing has happened thus far to convince us that the NSC and SARFU are incapable of resolving their differences in an amicable way and as a result we believe that it would be premature for us to pronounce on their stand-off, until they have had enough time to attend to the issues concerned.

We furthermore expect the NSC to need time to evaluate the outcome of SARFU's response to their ultimatum, and we would like to respect that.
