The Secretariat of the soon-to-be-established Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) will be hosting a Government Communicators' Consultative Conference on 6 May 1998 at the World Trade Centre, Kempton Park.
The purpose of the conference is to decide on the priorities for Government communication as a whole. It will be attended by approximately 180 representatives of all role-players in Government communication at national and provincial level.
This conference is part of a process of transforming Government communication. With this objective in mind, Deputy President Thabo Mbeki appointed the Task Group on Government Communication (generally known as Comtask) in February 1996. Subsequently an Implementation Committee with Dr Essop Pahad, Deputy Minister in the Office of the Deputy President, as Chairperson tabled a Cabinet Memorandum on transforming Government communication. This was adopted by the Cabinet in October 1997.
On this basis the input of all relevant role-players will be deliberated at the Consultative Conference in order to mould a model for Government communication for the future.
The new GCIS will formally be launched in Cape Town on 18 May 1998.
