STATEMENT BY WELFARE AND POPULATION DEVELOPMENT MINISTER GERALDINE FRASER-MOLEKETI ON THE CAPE TOWN MINIBUS CRASH THAT CLAIMED THE DEATH OF 16 PEOPLE
Welfare and Population Development Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, has sent condolences to the victims of Saturday's Cape Town horror crash between a car and a minibus taxi that led to the death of 16 people.
"I note with sadness the tragic and unfortunate death of 16 people in a crash in Cape Town on Saturday," Minister Fraser-Moleketi said on Sunday.
Said the Minister: "My condolences go to the families of the dead - the 15 people who were killed while trapped in a burning minibus taxi near Mitchells Plain, as well as to the family of the man driving a Mercedes-Benz who was killed in the three-car pile-up.
"I join in mourning for the dead, weep with the bereaved and wish the injured a speedy recovery."
The Minister has also called on South African motorists to take the Government's Arrive Campaign to heart.
Minister Fraser-Moleketi: "The Arrive Alive Campaign has already heightened the public's awareness of the consequences of not obeying the rules of the road.
"There are many motorists that have taken the campaign seriously but there are still those that drive recklessly, putting the lives of passengers at risk.
"The Arrive Alive Campaign is not merely a Government campaign, but it is South Africa's campaign for the safety of all on our roads. So let us make it succeed."
