JOINT STATEMENT BY THE CHAIRPERSONS OF THE JOINT STANDING COMMITTEE ON INTELLIGENCE (JSCI), THE JOINT STANDING COMMITTEE ON DEFENCE (JSCD) AND THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE ON SAFETY AND SECURITY:
BRIEFING ON "MEIRING REPORT" AND MOHAMED INQUIRY
1. At a meeting convened by the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence (JSCI) and attended by the Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD), the Office of the President (together with Minister J Modise, S Mufamadi and Deputy Ministers JM Nhlanhla and R Kasrils) briefed the meeting on the issues pertinent to both the "meiring report" and the findings of the Mohamed Commission of Inquiry.
2. The meeting was attended by representatives of all the Parliamentary political parties, with the exception of the PAC and the ACDP. The representative of the Freedom Front, the honourable Mr Chiole, left the meeting shortly after its commencement because of a decision that the meeting be closed to the media.
3. The Committee expressed gratitude to the Office of the President and the Ministers for the briefing.
4. The Committee further noted and reiterated their mandate and jurisdiction with respect to the matters under consideration.
5. The JSCI re-affirmed its commitment to vigorously monitor and effect oversight over this critical function of government in accordance with the Constitution and all relevant legislation.
